Jiuzhaigou's best known feature is its dozens of blue, green and turquoise colored lakes. The local Tibetan people call them "Haizi" in Chinese, meaning " son of the sea ". Originating in glacial activity, thy were dammed by rockfalls and other natural phenomena, then solidified by processes of carbonate deposition. Some of the lakes have high concentration of Calcium Carbonate.

Rhinoceros Lake one of the Nuorilang lakes and 2nd largest in the valley

The ecosystem is classified as temperate broad-leaf forest and woodlands, mixed mountain and highland systems. These forests have a very attractive yellow, orange and red hues especially in the Autumn, making it a most popular season for tourists. They are home to a number of plant species ie Rhododendron and bamboo.

The Mirror Lake is another quiet lake casting beautiful reflections..
